Event-based Analytics

back to glossary

What is event-based analytics?

Event-based analytics is a method of tracking data centered on individual user actions, called "events." In this model, every interaction—such as clicking a specific button, watching a video, filling out a form, or encountering an error message—is captured as its own data point with unique details attached to it. This approach moves beyond basic page-view counts, allowing digital teams to map out the granular choices users make during a single session.

What are key aspects of event-based analytics?

  • Granular interaction capture: Recording specific micro-actions like scrolls, form field focus, toggle switches, and video plays.
  • Event attributes (Metadata): Attaching extra details to an action, such as the price of an item added to a cart or the device layout a user was viewing.
  • User-centric mapping: Tying a sequence of distinct events to a single anonymous user ID to see how their actions flow together over time.
  • Custom event triggers: Allowing teams to define unique business milestones, like a user successfully downloading a guide or updating their settings.

What are the benefits of event-based analytics?

  • Deep feature insights: Shows exactly how users interact with complex, single-page web applications where URLs don't change when buttons are clicked.
  • Precise funnel building: Allows teams to build conversion funnels based on real user actions rather than relying on basic page transitions.
  • Better user segmentation: Makes it easy to group users by what they actually do, such as isolating customers who used a specific discount code.
  • Clearer customer context: Gives product designers a detailed view of the exact steps and choices that lead up to a conversion or a drop-off.

What are examples of event-based analytics practices?

  • Tracking video engagement: Measuring how many users click play on a product demo, pause it midway, or watch it all the way to the end.
  • Analyzing search filters: Tracking which specific sorting options (like price, rating, or size) shoppers use most frequently to find products.
  • Monitoring error events: Counting how many times a "password too weak" warning is triggered on a registration page to see if instructions need updating.
  • Evaluating menu usage: Seeing if users open a collapsible sidebar menu or if they bypass it entirely to find features.

How does Quantum Metric support event-based analytics?

Quantum Metric powers event tracking through its core Autocapture engine. The platform automatically records every raw interaction—such as clicks, scrolls, swipes, and API responses—out of the box without requiring manual code tags. To organize these actions into specific business events, teams can use the visual event creator to define and deploy custom milestones instantly without engineering support, feeding them directly into dashboards and funnels.
